Here is a little bit more information about our artists and what makes them tick!

Rita Althoff

One of our newest members, Rita creates colorful paintings that allow her to express her creativity in a studio space she shares with painter Dolly Sundstrom.

Gretchen Allison

was the chef/owner of Duck Soup Inn for many years, and since her “retirement,” has been exploring painting, creating beautiful abstract works inspired by the forms of nature. She layers images and ideas to give viewers the sense of mystery and movement.

Shannon Borg
Shannon creates oil paintings based on her fascination with South Beach on San Juan Island. She loves how people interact with the landscape, building driftwood huts, building fires, stacking stones. She also loves the strange, organic shapes and colors of the seaweed and creatures that wash up on the shoreline. Shannon loves exploring the randomness of brushwork and dripping paint that create layers that look like organic shapes in the sealife she loves.

Mary Bruce

is a lover of Asian and abstract art. In her small studio at the Atelier, Mary creates paintings with simple, colorful shapes that evoke the mystery and elegance of nature’s moods.

Winnie Brumsickle

Winnie loves shape and color, and she paints abstract paintings using a process of playing, exploring and refining her shape, line and color, letting the process help her discover the form of the piece. To me, Winnie’s paintings echo Paul Klee’s abstracts, with a beautiful subtlety of color variation, use of graphite lines, and many layers that build up over the surface of the painting. You must see these paintings up close to discover their delights.

Debbie Daniels

Debbie is a true master of photorealism, painting from photographs she takes at the beach of waves, water, stones and also boats, sails, and her newest exploration of flowers. Debbie’s process is painstaking, starting with an underpainting, mixing her colors carefully ahead of time, then laying the paint down precisely. Her larger paintings can take up to three weeks and many hours.

Alison Engle

Alison loves the wildlife and landscapes of the islands, and also has been exploring more abstract textures and shapes that her exploratory painting process reveals. Alison also will be having her first show at WaterWorks Gallery in the fall, and is in the process of creating a body of work focused on this abstract exploration.

David Harsh

David’s red-chalk figure drawings capture the essence of the figure in space, with sinuous lines and delicate details. David first began Life Drawing in 1975 and that endeavor has provided indispensable meaning for him ever since.  After receiving a B.F.A. in Drawing from the Pennsylvania State University David moved to Seattle where he participated in several Artist-managed cooperatives. In 2004, he moved to San Juan Island and have continued to study drawing, and also has worked as a master carpenter to restore historic buildings for the National Historical Parks.

Lori Hellstrom

Lori is a photographer and fiber artist in addition to drawing and painting. She loves to find the evocative in everyday scenes, such as the light glowing through a window, or a wave moving toward the shore. Her work is simple, yet mysterious, and her delicate drawings capture the figure in quiet moments.

Pam Hoke

Pam loves nature in all its forms, and her intention is to help her viewers connect with nature through the senses to heal and deepen their experience with the natural world. She has been exploring a series of farm animals recently, visiting local farms to get to know the animals as she paints them. She also spends a lot of time on Stuart Island, painting the vistas of sea and sky, flowers and landscapes of the islands she loves.

Lisa Lamoreaux

Lisa’s work has delighted and fascinated her collectors for many years with its depth of color, magical animals and layers of texture. Recently, Lisa has been incorporating layers of bold, abstract color, with a depth and mystery that pulls the viewer into the secret world of each painting. Come and see Lisa’s newest work.

Laura and Sammy Long

Laura and Sammy Long work together to create fine art sculptures and furniture that show the beauty of the natural materials they use, such as stone, wood, and bronze. As you wander through the Friday Harbor Atelier, their pieces create a sense of welcome, as the natural wood of a bench, or stone of a sculpture bring out the organic shapes of our everyday lives.

Jan Murphy

Jan’s shrines made from the things most people throw away show how an artist really thinks. She guilds these pieces a bit at a time, gathering text from old books, cigar boxes, old pictures, keys, doorknobs, doll parts and many other little odds and ends, creating pieces that evoke memory and sacred objects, showing that great art is truly more than the sum of its parts. Her whimsical, colorful paintings focus on the charming and sometimes hilarious animals she helps to protect in her volunteer work with animal protection organizations.

Teresa Smith

Teresa combines the color of light and nature with her spiritual journeys into the woods and fields of San Juan Island. Her paintings shimmer with the light of dawn or sunset as it touches a stand of trees or the surface of a pond. Her work is abstract and bold, bringing the viewer into the piece for the overall landscape and also the intricacies of brushwork, drips and edges, offering endless adventures for those who love color, paint and light.

Dolly Sundstrom

From a family of artisans, Dolly Sundstrom completed an art degree at the University of Washington and studied oil painting at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle for three years. She sees things simply and strives to paint their essence. Dolly just came across a set of encaustic tools and has been exploring the encaustic process - we are excited to see how wax enhances her moody landscapes.
